St.Kentigern's Well

St.Kentigern's Church, Castle Sowerby

On a well roll here ....
Who'd have thought it? The great thing about this well hunting malarkey is you look more closely at what is on your doorstep (especially when the Lakes are Easter busy and you can do a shortish adventure after having done some gardening and taken a deep breath and bravely faced a quick shop in Aldi).

I never knew this delightful church existed. It's remote but has a lovely view across the Caldbeck fells and towards the back of Blencathra.

It's thought that St.Kentigern (locally know as St.Mungo) did baptisms here. I didn't hold out any much hope of finding anything because I hadn't found much evidence of it on maps or things I'd read (although, again, there are little tell tale signs like the fact that Castle Sowerby was clearly a significant parish which is now only apparent on the map and certainly not on the ground where it is literally then end of a remote road ... but the focal point of various footpaths). I wandered around aimlessly looking for clues and walked along a few of the nearby paths to no avail. As I headed back a chap was just setting out to walk his dog and he sent me in the direction of the Vicarage/Hall and I sneaked into the garden and found the well which is a short distance from the Church.
