One stall two halves

Thursday is market day in the village, this stall is a favourite and today we bought local green asparagus, globe artichokes and more of his crinkly tomatoes we had last week, a good tasting variety.

Also spotted on another stall was a jar of thick creamy honey, it has that look of a local producer, always appealing, and I’ve just finished the book ‘The History of Bees’ by Maja Lunde and wish I’d taken more notice when John kept bees all those years ago. When he cut the grass a few days ago he left the little dandelions for any early bees that should arrive, when chatting to him about flowers and bees a wild bee appeared, say no more.

I enjoyed reading the book particularly in light of an issue at home during the last year about the use of neonicotinoids, a harsh pesticide, think DDT plus some, fortunately the decision to use it was withdrawn for now, many locals are very upset that its use was even considered and suspect a sleeping giant has been awoken.
