Hillhead Haiku for George Wyllie

The Advanced Higher English class at Hillhead High School in Glasgow has set itself the task of writing haiku poems inspired by George Wyllie. The haiku will then decorate a paper boat created by the class.

There's a lot going on in this idea, as pupils research George's work for inspiration, an image, a sense about which they can write.

Haiku writers use their senses, reflecting the seasons and nature in their imagery, and then... compare and contrast the images they have created to suggest a new way of seeing them.

As a form, it is well-chosen to reflect the work of George Wyllie.

Having discussed Liz Lochead's poem about the artist, having investigated the scul?tures and poems he created, the AH class moved on today to start creating their own writing, their haiku poems. Next week they will create the boat which the poems will decorate, and their boat will join the Mitchell fleet.
