Life in Newburgh on Ythan

Big tooth!

With a walrus in Scottish waters at the moment I thought a photograph of a walrus skull might be appropriate.

This handsome fellow was probably brought back from the Arctic by Peterhead whalers in the late 19th Century. Walruses were hunted mainly for their skin, which was in demand as the leather of choice for making the belts that turned the looms of the textile mills. The tusks (enlarged canine teeth) were carved to produce marine ivory works of art.
