Sphinx visits Portland

This enchanting sphinx is dated around 130 CE and was excavated in Lanuvium (near Rome) in the 18th Century by an adventurous and famously generous Scot named Gavin Hamilton. It is now the property of the British Museum, which has sent it to Portland as part of a world tour. A clearer view of her face is here. Spent a peaceful afternoon at the museum today, quiet after surviving yet another killer migraine yesterday.
