Seals
Sunny but with a chill wind at Marwick today. The whale carcase there had 4 glaucous gulls attending it, then I saw either new birds or the same between Marwick and Birsay Palace- so between 4 and 7 birds. No auks on the cliffs but lots of kittiwakes on nests. At Birsay links were 4 snow buntings and a pair of shelduck.
These seals were in a group of 11 hauled out at the Bay of Birsay. Traditionally called' common seals', naturalists are concerned at their dropping in number and tend to call them 'harbour seals' now, since they aint that common anymore.
