yagan square...

...Perth's brand new community space that links the CBD to Northbridge.
The square is named for indigenous Australian warrior Yagan, of the Whadjuk Noongar people, who played a key part in early resistance to British settlement and rule in the area surrounding what is now Perth.

Where the 'square' is now situated the area was an important meeting place for Aboriginal people particularly women who gathered food from the lakes that were once in this area.
Central and towering over the square is the huge 9m 'Wirin' sculpture,   'wirin' a Noongar word for 'spirit representing 'the eternal sacred force of creative power that connects all life to boodja (mother earth).'
Water has a role in the design and the layers in the building facades and materials reflect the geological strata of Western Australia and a tribute to the Red Tailed Black Cockatoo.

Today S and I had a brief wander through the square but I will be back!
Geology, feather colours and pre colonial history to be explored... very special.
