LAURA

Recent storms have removed large areas of sand from the local beaches . . . so the discovery for today is the wreck of the Austrian Steamship Laura.
On 21 November 1897 at 10.30AM this 2089 ton vessel, with a crew of 24 hands, was beached just North of the King and Queen Rocks. She was carrying a cargo of coke from Newcastle to Trieste. Despite efforts to save her over the next three days, she broke in two and remains here today, but only visible at low tides and low sand banks.
Indeed, the 5 mile stretch back to Filey boasts some 33 wrecks from varying periods ^.
