Now all we need is some rain.......
.....Can't believe I really said that. We bought this water butt a few years ago along with one of those fancy diverters and I tried to fix it in this position. Unfortunately the down pipe is cast iron and I soon realised there was no way I was going to be able to cut through it with my puny little power tools. I took the easy way out and plumbed it into the only plastic downpipe we have. The diverter worked well although as far as I could see it depended on water running down the inner surface of the pipe rather than falling freely through the air space. We used it for a few years but the problem was that it was in a narrow "corridor" between kitchen and porch and it was impossible to get behind it (except for leaves which accumalated in large quantities). A few months ago we had to move it to get access to the kitchen drain and it's been lying around ever since. Today our plumber with proper "he-man" tools came and sorted it out in the place we originally intended. Mrs P often prefers to use rain-water and a degging can rather than a hose. On my visits to my mum before she died she always used to "test" me on various words eg. "David - what's the proper word for a watering-can?" If she's watching she now knows I still remember.
