Flags of Leon

A parade of flags, or 'pendones' from Asturias' neighbouring province of León to the south.

There are a large number of residents of Gijon and Asturias with roots in Leon and this is part of their annual celebrations.

Apparently each of the 1,215 towns and villages of León has its own flag, of which the flags of about 450 towns are in good condition.

The flags, which would originally have been made of silk, are carried on flagpoles of between 4 and 12 metres.
