Hooky or proggy mat work

This shows a traditional North East England craft. Mats or rugs are made on a wooden frame. Hessian is stretched over the frame then strips of cut up woolen coats are woven into the hessian. The strips are poked- or prodded hence proggy mats- through the open weave of the hessian. Alternately the strips are looped through and the ends are left loose- as in the outside of the heart. The tool used is a hook with a wooden handle like a button hook. The traditional patterns usually have a wide black border. My grandparents had these mats on their floors .
