Medlands bay
Let me tell you a little about Great Barrier Island - The Maori name is Aotea meaning white cloud and it is a lot like the New Zealand l grew up in. The whole island consists of 940 permanent residents, two townships (not large), 3 primary schools, the largest one with a roll of 30 students. The whole island is off grid, that is no mains electricty - it is all generated by photo voltaic/solar power.
Everyone knows everyone, they wave as you drive by, no ATMs, water is used sparingly as it has to be caught rain. Enjoy your modern conveniences all you city folk. Auckland is the nearest big town, you catch a ferry over the rough channels or you can fly. It has its own micro climate, never going much below about 12°C during the day nor over late 20s C in summer.
Today's blip is looking over the bay in which we are staying, the extra is of a white faced heron looking out over Tryphena .
PS the island has dark skies status, l have just been out on decking looking at stars and milky way but have to admit that l find it kind of spooky that there are no other people about.
