October Challenge - Kenny Everett - Starting Point
Day 24 of the October daily challenge - Kenny Everett
Maurice Cole started his broadcasting career on the pirate radio station Radio London in the North Sea, having declined an offer from the BBC Light Programme. While out on the waves he teamed up with Dave Cash and together they presented the Kenny and Cash Show.
Growing up in the mid 1960s there was a wide choice of pirate radio stations to listen to, though there were 2 big ones - Caroline and London, you were either a Caroline person or a London person - I was a London person, so I got to know Kenny Everett early in his career.
I was also in London when Capital Radio launched with Kenny Everett presenting the Breakfast Show, and then reuniting with Dave Cash as well.
Frequently sacked (by most broadcasters he worked for) he was a loose cannon, but you couldn't contain his enthusiasm for the medium of radio, his sense of humour and fun. He spent hours putting together clips to play in to his shows, developing techniques to get the end result that he was after.
Even on television he was unique, coming up with more characters to add to his repertoire. Sid Snot, Cupid and many other characters are well known.
Kenny has been described as many things, most of them revolve around the word genius. He achieved things with tape recorders, a razor blade and splicing tape that many today would struggle to do with all of the technology now available.
