Englishman in the Balkans

Connectivity

Living in a village environment in Bosnia and Herzegovina, can be challenging at times, especially when it comes to access to the internet.

For a long time we had to make do with a very weak data signal supplied to us, via the old copper cabling that had provided landline telephone for over 20 years (or more).

The supplier is the local Telecom company. It's a bit of a monopoly here, so choice isn't on offer.

We still don't have anything better, even though it's 2018.

As for fiber optic cabling, well that's a dream.

Having said that, optic cabling is now in most of the cities and larger towns.

We create content for vlogs, blogs and podcasts.

This requires good data speeds for uploading, especially video.

To get us to where we need to be, we invested in a satellite feed from a UK provider.

It's expensive. Even more so by local standards. We are capped at 100GB per month (no limitedless package like in the UK).

Upload and download speeds, although not rocket fast, are better than most people here enjoy.

So, when we do get occasional poor speeds through our dish we feel it rather hard and get frustrated.

Today has been one of those occasions.

There are quite a few factors that might be causing our poor service and we'll most probably address those over the weekend.

Fingers crossed.

Another example of how much can be taken for granted in "first world" countries.
