I learned something new today. I always thought (because that was what I was taught) that the American War of Independence was started because the Americans rebelled against the dictatorial British taxes that were levied - the Boston Tea Party and all that. But this wasn't the only reason, or maybe even the main reason. The Americans rebelled against George III's Royal Proclamation of 1763 which forbade all settlement west of a line drawn along the Appalachian Mountains to prevent settlement on Native American land.
