As it's usually light on the way home I'd only sporadically poked at the rear light's wiring a few times over the past week. Once I'd unpeeled the wire from the mudguard stays it was fairly evident that the damage had been caused by the studs on the tyres slowly gnawing away at the insulation and then the core.
