A POWERFUL BEAK

I spotted this heron in our pond struggling to crack what I thought was a rock - or maybe a piece of man-made junk.  It wasn't until I put the shots on the computer that I could see it was actually a turtle!  He tried for over 5 minutes to crush it, as he washed it back & forth in the water and also dropped it onto rocks trying to break the shell.  Finally a later shot showed that the turtle was broken, and then - after one last washing - the heron swallowed it ALL, including the shell.  It was quite a lump going down that slender neck!  I wonder about their digestive system!  I love the look on his face like he won the jackpot finding this prize morsel!
