Catkins

Catkins are well known as a welcome harbinger of Spring. Everyone will recognise Hazel catkins I think and probably Willow also.

Perhaps these may be a little less familiar. They are male Alder catkins easily recognisable by their handsome purple colour. The smaller ones behind on the left are female.
