Outing O' The Week: Alviso Marina County Park, gateway to the Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge. We went up to San Jose for dim sum and then decided to explore this little park at the south end of the Bay at the mouth of the Guadalupe River. It's a strange site--a quiet open space on the water with grand views of the mountains in the distance, but just minutes from a mass of high tech glass and steel, two major freeways and an airport. We've zoomed by for years without any idea that this managed wetland existed.
Today the water was the most extraordinary color, a brassy yellow (no filters used on this image). I don't think of myself as a birder, but it was fun to see new creatures: there were avocets and black-necked stilts with their bright pink legs, and a harrier, flying low over the vegetation at the edge of the slough.
