Stan Laurel

Although he was born in Cumbria, Stan Laurel lived most of his early life in the North East of England. Here is a statue in his honour.

A comedian until the end, Laurel wrote his own epitaph: "If anyone at my funeral has a long face, I'll never speak to him again!"
