Strep
Well poor old CyclopsJnr came on much worse today, he was clingy and whimpering and unwilling to move. He wouldn’t eat and he said his ear hurt.
MrsCyclops took him to the GP. He fell asleep in the waiting room! The GP had a look at him and said it was probably an ear infection but that as he looked so terrible and was so pale and listless that he should go along to the hospital as a precaution. To be honest he is extremely pale at the best of times, but yes he did look dreadful.
This happened before when CyclopsJnr was one and had tonsillitis, so MrsCyclops knew not to be overly concerned about a hospital check up. Hopped on a bus up to the Sick Kids. CyclopsJnr fell asleep on the bus.
At the hospital we were triaged within minutes and put into a consulting room, and saw a doctor virtually straight away. She checked CyclopsJnr over and said it was probably a strep infection but that she’d just run a few tests to be sure. They took a bit of blood from a finger prick, and checked his BP and heart rate, and had Cardio come over and do an EKG. Then she went away to run it by the Consultant and came back with some medicine - 10 days of Amoxicillin.
CyclopsJnr was interested in the medical equipment and said “I’ve got one of those” when they took his BP. I explained he had a medical bag, and the nurse asked if he’d like to be a nurse or doctor when he grew up and he said “maybe”. But I think that’s all he said all morning, which isn’t like him at all.
We were there about two hours, mainly waiting between the tests, and everyone was so nice. CyclopsJnr was given a DVD of Minions to watch on a portable DVD player, and they made him some toast with cheese spread. But he didn’t want any of that, he just wanted to lie and sleep on the bed.
Even so, everyone was very kind and extremely thorough.
So, all good. Home by 2pm. About half way home the medicine must have kicked in as he suddenly said “Mummy that lady hurt my finger” and it was as if he switched back on! A stream of chatter. We went home and watched TV for the rest of the afternoon.
He’s still tired, but much improved.
