Sweet Potatoes
26th February 2018:
This is Angelina planting Sweet Potato in our factory garden.
Last year we decided to bring our horticulture to the Center for Learning which is over an acre around the factory.
The idea is to teach our girls who come for extra tuition at weekends and all-comers about sustainable farming. Organic of course without noxious chemicals and using nitrogen fixing plants and some compost to grow almost everything
We do of course grow Maize but using no bought-in fertilizer and of course not a sight of any of the noxious pesticides, the Monsanto brigade and its clones produce.
As an alternative to maize we encourage the growing of Sweet Potato and Cassava, to reduce the over-reliance on the sometimes unreliable maize.
Sweet potatoes are an excellent source of vitamin A (in the form of beta-carotene). They are also a very good source of vitamin C, manganese, copper, pantothenic acid and vitamin B6. Additionally, they are a good source of potassium, dietary fiber, niacin, vitamin B1, vitamin B2 and phosphorus.
All the 258 girls we support in Secondary School need to be leaders in growing their own food, sustainably
