Loch Coruisk

I had a brief visit to this Loch some years ago, while camping on Skye with my daughter, and it has always held a particular fascination for me. Its location has everything; sitting among the Cuillin surrounded by some of the best known peaks in Scotland, and with a stunning view down Loch Scavaig from where the Scavaig River pours into the sea.

The sail from Elgol on the Bella Jane was a pleasure, with a fascinating account from the crew of the surrounding islands and some of their tales. We sailed close to the infamous Bad Step and were given clear instructions on how to navigate it safely, should we ever choose to walk from Elgol.

On a day like today Loch Coruisk is beautiful, but it can be frightening and mysterious in less clement weather - I would not like to be here during a thunderstorm.

The only noises to disturb the peace today were the roars of the rutting stags. As we departed, we watched one with his three accompanying hinds coming down to the water's edge, and I had seen their footprints in the mud round the Loch.

Loch Coruisk is a very special place.
