Mullion Cove
Today we visited Porthleven, a small village clustered round its harbour. This was the village whose clock tower and frontage were badly damaged in the storms a few years ago. It has a history of pilchard fishing.
After a pub lunch on the harbourside we drove back to the hotel via Mullion Cove. A sheltered harbour with lofty cliffs and Mullion Island (Enys Pruen) at the opening to the small bay. It has an interesting history with its fringe involvements with the maritime history of the day. In the 1700's it had three grist mills and in the 1840's several fish cellars, net lofts and two cottages had been built (one of them in the photograph). The fishermen used catch their pilchard by using the inshore seine fishing method. This afternoon it was cloudy but it was wonderful being the only people there. Cornwall must be a nightmare in the tourist season! The lanes are so narrow.
