The Happy Heifer

A bit of rural tranquility after yesterday's march of the zombie hordes. Harriet the Happy Heifer relaxes in the sunshine with her pals in a field a few miles out of town.

Harriet watched with nonchalance (and a twinkle of amused amazement) as I climbed out of the Rust Bucket and fell headfirst into the ditch outside her field. Then her eyes monitored me carefully as I took her picture.

It's easy to compare Harriet with the fear-crazed animals goaded to annihilation in disgusting slaughterhouses that haven't changed a great deal since the publication of Upton Sinclair's 1906 classic book, The Jungle, exposed the Chicago meatpacking industry, (Free pdf download of book here)

If we really thought about the way society treats these beautiful, dignified creatures, we'd all be vegetarians. But we don't . . .
