Whoopers

Today's the day ..................... for swans a-grazing

I suppose we shouldn't really have been surprised to come across them - because we were next door to the Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust Nature Reserve at Caerlaverock.  But it was rather an impressive sight to see a whole flock of Whooper swans grazing in a field in the sunshine.

Whooper swans spend the summer breeding in Iceland, Scandinavia, northern Russia and northern Asia. The ones that are here in Scotland each winter - about 4000 of them - come from Iceland. In fact almost all of the whooper swans from Iceland migrate to the UK and Ireland.

It was a treat to see them ..................
