Odd pod

I wasn't sure about the GM food yesterday so asked Gill if she could find anything else at the supermarket. She came back with this odd pod full of what looked like embarrassed peas, or were they Cuban revolutionary peas? Or has the pod been taken over by aliens - invasion of the pod snatchers, perhaps? As yesterday, the colour hasn't been modified in Photoshop. Quiz questions: (a) Do you happen to know what they are? (b) Would they be safe to eat?

Clue time since the guessing is not going too well: these red things are the size of peas and quite fleshy in texture, not meat, not cheese but plant-based.
