Unilever dropped the beef at the height of the Mad Cow scare in 2004, changing it to a malt drink.

Not sure when, but as the furore died down, Unilever reintroduced the original beef recipe.

Deaths from CJD are now about 2 per year in the UK, and I heard somewhere that more people have actually died attending coferences on CJD than died of the disease.
