So much of life depends on knowing the names of things. Philosophers have debated this endlessly. Well, they will of course debate anything endlessly. But you need a word for something to explain it to other people. So when I tell you I saw an apple today you know what I mean by that. If we didn't have a word for it life would get complicated. But then there are names within names. So an apple is an apple but a type of apple is a specific apple. Helpful but not so essential. Unless you are an apple grower of course. But this is where it gets complicated and at times emotive. "What do you think of Jack?" is a very different question to "What do you think of Jack the Ripper"? Word association can be very powerful...and names even more so.

Had a lovely morning with TSM at the Royal Horticultural Society's annual "Taste of Autumn" festival this morning. They were selling pumpkins and squashes again this year which was lovely, and we also bought some apples. This blip is an actual fruity taxonomy of malus domestica, or the apple tree. Curiously "malus" means evil - must be the biblical story - told you names were emotive ... My absolute favourite apple name is Joybells (on the centre right of the blip) ... what a lovely word.

Other than that - a domestic and career thinking day ... putting my house in order on more than one level ...
