Aquamarine/Nanna K's Day

Waterbuck

Today we did a LOT of driving around in the safari vehicles - early morning and again late afternoon on the hottest day yet . Over 40c. 105 F. We gave our little thermometer/compass to our guide who was very interested in it- so now we won't know what the temperature is. Probably better. We saw all the usual antelope, buffalo, baboons, elephants- but not one lion or leopard for all that work .... That's the way of things out in the bush. But the countryside is beautiful and the light at both those times of day is wonderful. So I haven't blipped any one of the antelope (horns, not antlers) family before and I really liked the coloring on this waterbuck in the dry bush. ( these shrubs will all be green after the rainy season). You can tell a waterbuck as it looks like it just sat down on a wet white painted toilet seat!
The best story of the day however occurred in between the 2 drives right in camp. My path from our tent to the lodge was blocked by a browsing elephant so I stood waiting for him to move. Then a second elephant came up. The first one diverted himself to someone's "yard" while the second one would not budge. So after waiting a bit more I had to go around the front of the tents to get by. ( I'll post this one on flicker when I can....). Another fellow in our group had his door blocked by a hippo and another had baboons frolicking in their patio. While we were gone the day before, an elephant broke through the railing on the little bridge to our tent. This is called "sharing the earth" I think.
Too hot to sleep....
