Wymondham Abbey

Wymondham Abbey was founded in 1107 by William d'Aubigny, Chief Butler of Henry 1. It was dependency of the Benedictine St Albans Abbey.

A magnificent Norman buildling, it was completed in 1130, and dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The current building is only about half the original length.

The single tall West Tower prominent in this view, was begun in 1447.

The monastery was dislolved in 1538, and the nave used as a parish church, with the chancel and monastic buildings used as a stone quary.
