St Andrew's Church, Chesterton, Cambs.

A church has existed on this site since  c.1200 as the names of the rectors are known from that time. It is thought to be a prescription church, built by the efforts of the villagers, who were mainly "serfs and villeins." Although restored over the years some original parts remain. In the mid 1400's an older painting over the chancel arch was replaced by a very fine picture of the Last Judgment. So called Doom Paintings, which were quite common at the time, but almost none survive and this painting at St Andrew's is one of the best. It has been studied and photographed in detail by experts. On the left is the new Jerusalem with the righteous  souls rising to heaven and on the right, the devils are dragging others off to punishment although it's very faded  and you can't see much from this angle. This church has a very interesting history....and the church bells still ring out on  Sundays.
