A successful day
It started of to be a beautiful day with blue skies so I dragged my husband off to the Finger Lakes again to go bird watching. I wanted to start at Ithaca's Stewart Park where large flocks of ducks and seagulls hang out over the winter. By the time we got to Ithaca it was gray and cloudy ( a rerun fo the last time we tried this). There were not as many ducks as I have seen sometimes , but a raft of geese, redheads and a few scoters ( the latter of which were pointed out by someone with a spotting scope).Gulls are even more beyond my ID skills than ducks are, but there were a lot of gulls hanging out on the iceland in the water. We did see an eagle though - immature bald.
Of course the real reason for heading here was to continue up to Seneca Falls again and look for the owls. No short ears ( again) but we caught sight of a kestrel ( lousy out of focus photo though) , 2 harriers and !!! both of the snowys!!! YAY! First time we found them was due to some crows, which I thought might be chasing something. It turned out to be 2 snowys on the runway at the airport surrounded by crows. The crows were harassing them , but they were totally unconcerned. One extra is the whiter of the 2 surrounded by crows. The second extra is later in the day we found that one in a field, with the more heavily barred one ( we saw a few weeks ago) one a pole. That one seems to like heights.
