...schmee-PS.  Well actually I think I will look into some technology soon because I do like recording routes, and then options for route planning look pretty useful...I will need to spend a bit of time learning about it though.

Anyway in the meantime I do have a minimum need for distance knowledge on an audax when following a route sheet; my last bike computer conked out a while ago (quite annoyingly at 499 of 600 km) so the last few I've done have involved a watch and mental arithmetic, and that gets tiring after a while, plus it's very approximate on a hilly ride (everything is 20 kph).

Evans had this for £12.50 so that'll keep me going for a while.
