Steyning
On the trail of Simon Jenkins 1000 best churches I visited St Andrews in Steyning excited by it's Saxon origins. Not the tower that's 1600s. Luckily Mother had not struggled in the rain through the churchyard because the church was locked. I could just glimpse the tombstone of King Ethelwulf (died 853), the father of Alfred the Great through the porch glass. It was pouring with rain so I wasn't going to spend time searching the outside for signs of its past. I will try again another day and because there are lots of Saxon and Norman relics to see inside.
