The firmament

Before the concept of infinite space took hold it was assumed  that we lived under a solid (firm) dome of sky and looking up could see the vault or arch of this structure, at night sprinkled with stars or, on days such as this, swirling with clouds.
This is the view from behind the house. Its late afternoon shadow lies across the field.
