The exhibition at the International Center of Photography that we visited yesterday were images of the mass incarceration of Japanese families that took place in the early 1940’s, taken by the likes of Ansel Adams and Dorothea Lange. Such huge injustice. Many lost their farms and livelihoods, many never returned to the east coast. Then today, sitting in Washington Square, where the beatnics and folkies defied a government ban and black listing in the late 50’s, to protest against right wing extremism. And it seems to be here again, with Trump and his nationalistic racism. Getting visas for some of our students to enter the US was very painful, especially for those who come from countries with stan in their name.
