Snow and ships

The last day of our little mini-break in Fort William.

After the whiteout that saw us following a snow plough all the way from Mallaig to Fort William yesterday afternoon (thank goodness we stopped at Glenfinnan on the way to Arisaig in the morning, rather than on the way back!) we woke to more snow this morning. However by the time we’d had breakfast it was much brighter, so we headed just up the road to the Caledonian Canal to see Neptune's Staircase – Thomas Telford’s famous staircase lock (the longest in Britain, apparently). See the first Extra for a collage of images top to bottom.

We walked along the Great Glen Way path by the side of the canal to the locks at Corpach where the canal meets Loch Linnhe. On the beach between Corpach and Caol is a shipwreck (Main photo) – Ben Nevis makes for a great backdrop!

Had a very brief stop on the way home to get a Glencoe photo (second Extra) – within 10 minutes of this being taken it was snowing heavily again!
