Souterrain

A fascinating visit today to a new house site a few miles north of me in Cnoc Aird. (We call it ‘cnoc aird’ - the high hill- but it is barely 100 above sea level. The landscape is so flat in Ness that altitude is relative!). The digger driver exposed this underground house when he was clearing the site for the house foundations. It is an Iron Age souterrain, probably about 2000 years old and used as a network of storehouses. You never know what is just below your feet!
