A sister for freedom

Alice Hawkins born 1863 became a member of the WSPU in 1907 when she attended her first meeting at Hyde Park. Later that same afternoon she was arrested and imprisoned for the first time in her life. Over the following 7 years she would be arrested and jailed a total of 5 times.
She was fully supported in her campaign for womens sufferage by her husband Alfred.
She died in 1946 at the age of 83.

The statue was unveiled in Leicesters market square on Sunday
