Surprise Cinema Club

Do you remember a few weeks ago when I went out for a drink with Dom and the Minx? And I took the picture of Dom's hand? No?

Anyway, that evening, as they schemed their next artistic adventure, I fell to wondering what I might do. I started with the supposition that, realistically, it wouldn't be anything creative: I wrote a few hundred words for my novel, last year, and started one piece of music with Simon that didn't come to anything. Creative, chums, is not really where I'm at.

But I can curate. That's all the radio show is, I think; me curating music and crapping on a bit in between each track. And I remembered when the Minx and I stayed at Victoria Warehouse and I loved their little twenty seat cinema. So, while Dom and the Minx were plotting, I wrote down a list of films.

As with choosing music for Electronic Ears, so with choosing films; I wasn't quite sure of my criteria but I knew in my heart what was a fit. And that done, I rang Victoria Warehouse and booked the cinema for this evening and then set about inviting people along.

And tonight was the night. Well, the first night. We all met up in the bar and had a few drinks and a bite to eat, and what a lovely little company it was. My anxieties about the whole venture evaporated and by the time I stood up to thank everyone for coming and to announce the film, I felt simply happy.

The film was 'Last Orders', the film of the book by Graham Swift, and a magnificent ensemble piece: Michael Caine, Helen Mirren, Tom Courtenay, Ray Winstone, David Hemmings, and, most magnificently, Bob Hoskins. If you've never seen it, I can't recommend it enough. And if you have, watch it again, it's even better than you remember it being.
