Pileated woodpecker
I have achieved one of my birding goals: a picture of a pileated woodpecker at work. This bird is about 15 inches in length and very striking with the red patch on top of his head. I am very excited about this blip and have posted more pictures of him at my Flickr site if you want to see them. He drills a large and very precise rectangular hole, looking for insects, the mainstay of his diet.
So cold in the park today. After two days of slightly warmer weather, the temperature dropped back into the teens, the mushy snow froze solid, and my fingers felt like ice cubes gripping the camera. Nevertheless, I am a happy blipper!
