Trakai Island Castle
After finishing our teaching commitments at lunch time rather glad of some R&R we headed out of town to Trakai in unseasonable warmth with spectacular autumn colours.
The local delicacy is a meat pastry introduced by the Karaim community who arrived here in the 14th century from the Turkic speaking world. I'm not sure if the link has been made ethnically, but it looked like and tasted like a Cornish pasty, and there's going to be big trouble when Lithainia start to flex their muscle in the EU as to who branded it first.
After a delightful afternoon we were collected by our host and went out for a meal in a Russian restaurant. The early evening was lovely then things took a surreal turn. In defference to the nationality of the place I ordered a vodka (just one) then the live music started, a sort of russian eurovision gig, then a KGB type big chap got up to sing(sort of warbly frank Sinatra pub singer meets vodka destroyed soviet agent, you know the type), he then had a wee fight with someone then left with his bodyguards. The dance floor was frequented by so many improbable boob jobs that I had to seek indepenant verification that it wasnt just vodka goggles. We extricated ourselves and I'll never drink a shot of vodka again.
Flying home tomorrow
