Gulls

Just seagulls on the seashore – well yes . . . but . . .
 
As we wandered the seafront, across the road from where we are staying, in the early evening, I was actually taking pictures of the canoeists and surfers and kids playing in the water. I took pictures of gulls, because I liked the reflections in the last of the sun.


Then we looked them up and these turn out to be Hartlaub’s Gulls, whose habitat is the South Western Atlantic Coast of South Africa, although concentrated mainly within the Cape Town area. Interestingly their main breeding area is on Robben Island, where of course Mandela was imprisoned. The adults fly to the mainland to find food for their chicks, a round trip of about 24 km. Although a relatively rare gull, it is often regarded as a nuisance in Cape Town itself – such is life. No one seems to mind them here in Fish Hoek.
