Visit to Northleach

A nice lunch out in Northleach today at the Wheatsheaf Inn, highly recommended.

Northleach was a thriving hub of the Cotswold woollen industry in the 15th century and has an historic wool church, which I visited briefly. The brass plaque shows the daughters of William and Margaret Bicknell, who built a chapel there in 1489. This was just after the conclusion of the Wars of the Roses and there are corbels of Henry Tudor (red rose) and Elizabeth of York (white rose) whose marriage united the warring factions.

Children's author Cynthia Harnett wrote a brilliant novel set around Northleach and the woollen industry at this time, which is well worth reading if you can get hold of a copy.
