Diary of an Edinburgher

By LadyMarchmont

Stingers!

After another nice breakfast spoilt by the accompanying warbling. Today we tootled about Derbyshire. We went to Eyam, the plague village. I had visited it with a friend years ago. In fact, this friend knew The Lord and Lady of the Hall, and we had afternoon tea there. Not this time- just a wee wander, meeting loads of noisy schoolchildren, who were finding out about how the villagers quarantined themselves when the plague hit their village. It's a great story.

From there we tootled over to Buxton, had a wander and admired the Opera House and the Gardens, then we went to Matlock Bath. What wonderful countryside!

It wasn't always possible to stop to take photos, but luckily enough, there was a gateway and a long straight bit of road where these fine beasts were. They came quite near. Just look at those muddy feet! I grabbed a handful of grass to lure them closer, only it was a handful of nettles! I haven't had a nettle sting for many many years, and I can tell you now - it's bloomin' sore. My fingers were stinging and sore to touch even the next morning! So beware.

We had fish and chips in Matlock Bath.
'Peasbeanscoorieorgravy?'

JR: 'Pardon?'
'Peasbeanscoorieorgravy?'

JR had to ask again, but I'd understood after the second time.

'Peas, beans, curry or gravy (with your fish and chips)?'

That night we booked in to a Travelodge near Cheltenham. No stars this time!
