Musselburgh is sometimes regarded as the oldest town in Scotland and was on the main route from the east to Edinburgh about 10 kilometres away.  Just below the New Bridge which replaced the rebuilt Roman Bridge dozens of gulls, ducks, geese and swans were on the banks of the Esk and swimming in the water in the late afternoon sunshine.  Meanwhile thousands of oyster catchers and other birds were settling down for the night at the nearby Levenhall Lagoons (extra)
