Southern Scenic Route
We departed Lake Monwai in no great rush and wended our way down the Southern Scenic Route to Tuatapere. I'd always wanted to go there as my great great grandfather was originally from there. It was interesting, a small unique Southern Town, with a famous sausage butcher. Which of course we had to indulge in.
Then off across the deep south towards Invercargill. But being tough mainlanders, we decided to stop for lunch. A BBQ in a howling gale at McCrackens Rest, just a few minutes out of Tuatapere. Kids had a great time on the beach while I braved the BBQ and cold, then we huddled inside, ate lunch and departed for Invercargill, with a brief stop at Monkey Island.
Arrived in Invercargill in torrential rain, retreated to the nearest Top 10 campground and got an early night. Not many other choices. Top 10 Invercargill not quite as good as Te Anau, but then it was $30 cheaper per night.
We're looking west towards the Hump Ridge track, which I'd love to do one day.
