Tectonic Plates make Mountains

The structures of some of our local peaks really show the huge forces that have pushed them into their current shapes, especially when they have snow on them. However mountains also change much more quickly, and with devastating results sometimes, when the weight of snow and melting release an avalanche. Just 20 minutes from where I took this photo and on a major footpath, I was literally stopped in my tracks by the huge avalanche in the extra. It probably came down yesterday, I haven't heard that anyone was caught in it. I think I shall stay miles away from steep slopes for some time this winter!
