River Ericht and Cargill's Leap
For our Saturday outing, Mrs P and I walked the Knockie Path from Blairgowrie. It was shorter than our usual day out, because the weather didn't look promising. However the route was full of interest all the way round, with excellent views, and this stunning gorge on the River Ericht is just a short walk out of the town.
My extra is the spot called Cargill's Leap, on the same stretch of the Ericht. It's a remarkable sight, but I don't like my picture of it much and I'm not sure what it would take to do it justice.
Donald Cargill, a Covenanter minister escaped capture by jumping the river here. He was eventually caught, and executed in 1681. A reminder that our freedom to choose a religion, or none, was hard won. (Of course, the Covenanters themselves weren't much in favour of religious freedom either; only of their own version.)
